Despite a strike zone that early on was seemingly moving around as much as his slider, John Smoltz has cobbled together four vintage innings–after several flinty stares of contempt towards home.
Also vintage Smoltz.
The forty year old’s fastball has hit 96 a couple times on an incredulous radar gun and his shoulder, so far, looks fine. Also looking fine is the Braves new center fielder, Mark Kotsay. In addition to swinging a hot bat, Andruw Jones’ replacement has only scored the go ahead run, fired a laser to home to keep a runner at third, and then another to first for an inning ending double play when Carlos Delgado wandered too far off the bag (perhaps buying a little sales job from Kotsay).
It would be a nice gift for Smoltz if the Braves could cinch the win for him–something they were unable to do far too many times last year during starts that deserved it.

I am really liking Kotsay in center this year. The man’s got a cannon.
He may cover less ground out there than did his predecessor–but Kotsay’s arm has been lethal.
