The voice of the Atlanta Braves for 33 years, Skip Caray, died last night. He was 68.
The cause of death of the remarkable announcer is not yet known. He was suffering from myriad of health problems, including diabetes and liver failure.
Caray provided Braves fans with numerous memories during the team’s amazing run of 14 straight division titles. Most memorable was his “Braves Win! Braves Win” heard through so many years of games.
Other memorable moments was the 1992 Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates when pinch hitter Francisco Cabrera looped a single that brought slow Sid Bream home to score:
“Here comes Bream! Here’s the throw to the plate! He iiiiiiiisssssssss … safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! … Braves win!”
Team members are mourning Caray’s death.
“It’s a sad day,” [John] Smoltz said. “There are no words. Sad doesn’t do it justice. I will always remember Skip for his humor and his ability to go about life the way he did. I gained so much respect for what he did and how long he did and how he did.”
Chipper Jones said:
“I figured Skip Caray is as much a part of Atlanta Braves baseball as any of us,” said Jones, who will rejoin the team in Arizona later this week. “We all grew up listening to Skip, whether it be on TV or radio. Any time the guys on ESPN imitate [you] calling the highlights, you’re pretty much a legend. From a fan’s standpoint, he’s going to be a huge loss for them because he relayed the games to fans for so long.”
Rest in Peace, Caray. And remember: Braves Win!

I have listened to Pete & Skip since the late 70’s; Braves radiocasts will never be the same. Not only does my heart go to Paula, Chip and the Carey family; but also goes to Pete, who will be doing his first home game without Skip in 33 yrs.
With the emergence of XM satellite radio and the ability to listen to various broadcasters of the other MLB teams, one thing stands out — the Braves were really blessed to have Skip and Pete as their broadcasters!
Good luck, Pete and God Bless; and a big “Thanks” to Mark Lemke to pinch-hitting during a very difficult time.
